THE COMMUNITY

Market:
Mid-Michigan"s local economy is a diverse business community, anchored by the government, insurance, education, and automotive industries. Being the capital of Michigan, the state government holds the largest stake in the labor force, many of whom live in the region. The Lansing area is home to four major insurance companies, as well the nation's pioneer land grant college, Michigan State University, which features over 10,000 employees and 42,000 students. General Motors also employs a large percentage of the area workers, and has invested millions of dollars in the market through offices and high-tech manufacturing plants, including the Grand River Assembly Plant, home of the Cadillac CTS, and the new Delta Township Assembly Plant, producing the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave.

Things to do:
Residents of the area enjoy a wide variety of activities, including some of the most exceptional attractions in the midwest. Michigan State University is a popular destination, featuring the Kresge Art Center, as well as the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, considered one of the top performing art venues in the country. The Jack Breslin Student Events Center is also located on campus, which doubles as a concert venue and sports arena, and is recognized as one of the premier college basketball venues in the nation. During the winter months, the Breslin Center has the hottest ticket in town, as it is home to the Michigan State Spartan basketball teams, as well as the Izzone, one of the most feared student sections in college basketball. East Lansing is also home to the Michigan State Spartan hockey and football teams, which are among the most elite programs in the country and consistently draw thousands of loyal fans. Area residents also take pride in the professional sports scene, which includes the Lansing Lugnuts AAA baseball team, and the nearby Detroit Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and Lions.
