| COMMUNITY IN MOURNING COMES TOGETHER AT THE STAR'S SEPT. 11 MEMORIAL | |
The Star Publisher Jennie Lambert won't soon forget the red, white and blue lights that pulsed around the historic courtsquare in Shelby, N.C., on Sept. 18, 2001.
The community had come together to commemorate the thousands who died or were injured on Sept. 11. The Star had sponsored the event, and Lambert and Star associates organized the activities and donated their time to make it happen. "We felt we had to do something to bring people together in this time of national tragedy," Lambert said. "People in our area are deeply rooted in traditional values centered around God, family and country. We wanted these common values to be celebrated and reflected in the gathering." As is typical of events sponsored by The Star, volunteers were plentiful. Mark Van Buren, director of Information Services, provided the sound equipment. Editor Skip Foster worked with the Sheriff's Department. Reporter Cassie Tarpley provided preview coverage. Administrative assistant Donna Roddy coordinated volunteers. Nearly every associate at The Star volunteered to help in some way. Prayer, scripture, hymns and patriotic songs united the crowd of thousands in a service led by the Cleveland County Christian Ministers Fellowship. Young and old alike participated. "When the firetrucks, rescue vehicles and police cars flanked the square with their lights pulsing, I couldn't help but be proud that The Star and all its associates had helped the community convene at this time of national mourning," Lambert said. |
