| NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SUCCEEDS OUTSIDE "DAILY PAPER" THINKING | |
Ed Moss was on a mission in 2001. As senior vice president for Freedom Newspapers of Arizona and director of New Business Development, he and a dedicated team of Freedom associates initiated a series of programs that provided training and a format to identify and develop new niche products. The team organized meetings, workshops and conferences that outlined opportunities for new products and ideas such as specialty publications, coupon books, magazines, shoppers and more.
"Our goal is that a large percent of our revenue will be derived from non-daily-newspaper sources. We launched the New Business Development Initiative to create and develop products and services outside of the daily-newspaper channels and to drive revenue for the company in non-traditional ways," Moss said. For Moss, sharing resources is essential for building revenue and is the emphasis of his workshops. "We are trying to identify people throughout the company with expertise they can share with others." The programs have been an immediate success. The new business development effort resulted in more than 130 new business projects that have generated $3.6 million in new revenue for Freedom newspapers. "We really believe this is the key to our future, and it's proving to be true. We've got to develop revenue from different sources. The idea is to get people to think outside the box, to get out of the daily newspaper mentality, to drive new revenue in innovative ways." |
