RELEVANCE LEADS TO REVENUE AT MYOC.COM
When CEO Ginger Neal and her team took over at myOC.com in 2001, the Orange County Web portal needed help. Charged with building a Web site that was profitable and reflected the needs of the community, she and her team began by redesigning both myOC.com and its sister site at The Orange County Register, OCRegister.com.

The revised sites received rave reviews—both from the industry at large and from the communities they serve, and as a result, revenue at myOC.com is up 45 percent.

"When we started," Neal said, "we essentially had a newspaper site, a good one to be sure, but not what we needed to generate new business. We now have billboards, chats, e-mail and personalization. Our discussion boards generate 30,000 views per week. We've launched all 34 of our cities. We grew about 300 percent in 2001. What we've essentially done is made the site profitable by making it pertinent to the community."

To make that happen, the team changed the technology platform, redesigned the look and feel, and added new content and products.

"We are giving a voice to the community and, in the process, creating a robust set of services for our advertisers and partners and expanding the revenue opportunities for Freedom," Neal said.
