East Valley Tribune wins Pulitzer Prize in local reporting

April 20, 2009 - The East Valley Tribune in Mesa, Ariz. won a Pulitzer Prize in local reporting today for its Reasonable Doubt investigation. The story was reported by Ryan Gabrielson (pictured) and Paul Giblin.

“It’s just an incredible testament to the work that was done on that story and it’s nice to see our journalism being recognized in such a prestigious way,” publisher Julie Moreno said. “It does speak to the commitment we have to serving the readers in our community with quality journalism.”

The five-part series investigated the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office’s illegal immigration enforcement efforts, specifically revealing how a sheriff's focus on immigration enforcement endangered investigations of other crimes.

The Pulitzer Prize is regarded as the highest national honor in newspaper journalism. Winners of the 92nd annual awards were announced today at Columbia University.
