The Press-Enterprise and The Sun receive national honors for reporting excellence

APRIL 22, 2016 - The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) recognized the newsrooms at The Press-Enterprise in Riverside and The Sun in San Bernardino with national awards for their reporting of the Dec. 2 terrorist attacks in San Bernardino.

Both newspapers received Sigma Delta Chi Awards in the deadline reporting category. The Press-Enterprise received the award among newspapers with a daily circulation between 50,000 and 100,000, and The Sun was recognized among newspapers with a daily circulation under 50,000.

"The newsrooms at The Press-Enterprise and The Sun are honored to receive such a prestigious acknowledgement from the Society of Professional Journalists," said Frank Pine, executive editor at Southern California News Group, which includes The Press-Enterprise and The Sun. "It is our responsibility as the primary local media voices in San Bernardino and surrounding communities to report with clarity, depth and accuracy. The awards are a testament to our newsrooms’ commitment to serving readers when significant news events occur in their neighborhood."

When commenting on the reporting by The Press Enterprise, SPJ judges said: “While journalists hopefully never have to write more stories like this, the article was a great example for if such an event happens as well as provides other journalists with a great read to strive toward in all of their work.”

Judges said the following comments specific to The Sun’s reporting: “An outstanding collection of coverage across multiple platforms on one of the biggest stories of the year. From the main print stories to commentary to social media collections, The Sun delivered an incredible package of news on deadline. Thorough and well sourced.”

Sigma Delta Chi Awards recognize the best in professional journalism in categories covering print, radio, television, newsletters, art/graphics, online and research. Awards are open to any work published or broadcast by a U.S. or international media outlet during 2015. Judges selected the winning entries from more than 1,400 entries.

The Society of Professional Journalists is the oldest and among the most prestigious organizations representing journalists in the United States. The Sigma Delta Chi Awards date back to 1932, when the Society first honored six individuals for contributions to journalism. The awards will be distributed at a reception at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on June 24.
