Special features:
The Monitor works hard to reflect the unique culture of the region and the people it serves. Its Festiva section is loaded with entertainment news featuring stars of Mexican movies, television and music, as well as those of the United States. A local specialty is Tejano music, a form popular in the Hispanic communities of the U.S. Southwest and northern Mexico.

Awards:
Numerous first-place Texas Associated Press Managing Editor awards during the 1990s, including categories of editorial writing, page one design, best series and community service.

THE COMMUNITY

Location:
The Rio Grande Valley is located in the southernmost region of Texas, along the Texas-Mexico border. The area is unique ecologically. Mild winters, a relatively low cost of living, friendly people, access to shopping, dining and tourism, and a low crime rate are other advantages.

Market:
McAllen is at the brink of taking off. It is the second-fastest growing area in the nation with a diversified economy. Construction, retail sales and trade with Mexico fuels the local economic picture. There is a community college and a university for educational needs.

Things to do:
Live entertainment with a Hispanic flair abounds. Minor-league baseball is 35 miles away, with an expansion team slated for Hidalgo County in 2001. Professional hockey is on the way. There’s also the finest beach in Texas nearby, opportunities for eco-tourism (the region is one of world’s best for birdwatching), and shopping, dining and tourism in Mexico.

Population:
500,000 in Hidalgo County. Almost one million in Rio Grande Valley.

Median home price:
$93,000.
