Inc. in 1974.

Philosophy:
The Sun Journal fosters a work environment
with an accent on teamwork. The chemistry is great here,
and although we are just 16,000 in circulation, we think
much larger.
Special features:
We are a visually oriented newspaper,
relying on award-winning local art to help drive our
news pages. We also rely heavily on local content, including
coverage of the rivers, environment and military.
Awards:
Numerous NCPA awards for photography,
design, investigative reporting and columns.
THE COMMUNITY
Location:
New Bern was the Colonial Capital
of North Carolina, the first State Capital, and the
birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. We are just 35 miles from
the beach, two hours from Raleigh and three from Myrtle
Beach. New Bern has a four-season climate, although
winter is remarkably brief. Snow may dust the ground
once a year, but climatic extremes are very rare.
Market:
Industrial-manufacturing economy.
Predominantly 50 and older, with a large segment of
adults with families. Tourism has a major economic impact on the area with domestic travelers spending over $95 million in Craven County annually.
Things to do:
Outdoor recreational opportunities
attract thousands of people from throughout the U.S.
Sailors and fishermen ply the waters of the Neuse River
and nearby Pamilco Sound 12 months of the year. The
graceful Trent River, a water-skiing and fishing paradise,
has been called the country club of bass
by a noted writer. There are nine golf courses in and
surrounding New Bern, and the hunter will find an abundance
of wild game and waterfowl. New Bern is also a community
immersed in both culture and the arts, with festivals
and cultural events occuring throughout the year. Minor
league baseball and NCAA sports are also available.
